Boxwood Means, Inc. performed an original analysis of community bank lending in the small balance commercial (SBC) space. Based on a sample of community banks, Boxwood researchers estimate that community banks account for roughly one-half of total originations in the SBC market. In addition, community bank loan production over 12 months ending June 2013 - a period in which Boxwood determined that overall originations declined - was relatively more stable than the SBC market as a whole.
